Air link to war-torn Sierra Leone By Roger Bray Published: March 10 2005 02:00 | Last updated: March 10 2005 02:00 FT.com
As Sierra Leone recovers from more than 10 years of civil war, a fledgling airline based in Senegal has announced plans to fly there from London. Air Salone is scheduled to operate once a week from Gatwick to Freetown via Dakar, starting later this month. It will use a Boeing 747 leased with crew from Air Slovakia. The aircraft will have 14 seats in business class and 190 in economy. Richard Burgess, managing director of Airline Business Limited, the carrier's London representatives, concedes that it looks like a brave move. The UK's foreign office warns that because of Britain's high-profile involvement in the peace process in Sierra Leone, British nationals remain potential targets for disaffected elements. It says travellers should "remain vigilant and avoid demonstrations and political gatherings". Air Salone's flights will depart from London at 8am on Saturdays, arriving in the Senegalese capital at 4pm and Freetown at 6.40pm. They will return at 8pm that night, arriving in Dakar at 9.40pm, leaving again at 11pm and reaching Gatwick at 7am the following morning. ------------------------ Yahoo!
