Arms dealers marked by SA spy Johannesburg - South Africa's police and US officials were seeking further information on Thursday on the reported arrest of a South African in New York on weapons smuggling charges. According to reports by Associated Press South African Christiaan De Wet Spies was arrested with 17 other people in an FBI undercover operation at a hotel in Manhattan, New York and appeared in court on Tuesday. The agency reported US attorney David Kelly as saying that Spies and the other people arrested were "serious threats who demonstrated a clear ability and intent to sell military weaponry to the FBI informant". The informant is reportedly a South African living in Texas. Director Sally De Beer of national police commissioner Jackie Selebi's office told Sapa that they could not comment until they had discussed the matter with officials in the department of foreign affairs. The US embassy was still gathering information on the arrests. Meanwhile, arms procurement agency Armscor said that it had run a human resources check on Spies in response to media enquiries and found no record of him. "We pulled all the records and we don't know such a person," Armscor spokesperson Billy Nell told Sapa. Denel spokesperson Sam Basch said that they were currently going through the human resource records at all their factories which include the Western Cape and Potchefstroom. "We will have to look into this," he said adding that Spies, who carries the names of a Boer war general, does not immediately stand out. A foreign affairs spokesperson was not immediately available. According to the AP report, Spies is 33 and entered the country on a tourist visa in 1999. He was also appealing a deportation order that came after his arrest on a drug possession charge. -- Now, my own suspicion is that the Universe is not only queerer than we suppose, but queerer than we can suppose. -- J.B.S.
