Egypt to cooperate with Israel on military intelligence in 'sea change'

TEL AVIV Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has agreed to begin the
exchange of intelligence between the Egyptian and Israeli militaries,
Israeli officials said. They said Mubarak and Defense Minister Hussein
Tantawi said representatives of both militaries would meet to discuss
the plan.

"We are talking about a sea change regarding Egypt's attitude toward
military cooperation with Israel," an Israeli official said. "There's
a lot that must be done, but until now Egypt has never even considered
real military cooperation."

The intelligence exchange would focus on information regarding Al
Qaida and related insurgency groups, officials said, including threat
assessments and ways to combat them.

The Egyptian and Israeli militaries will also discuss threats to the
Gaza-Egyptian and Israeli-Egyptian border.

Officials said the cooperation is part of an Israeli commitment for a
withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, including the 8-kilometer border
between Egypt's Sinai Peninsula and the Gaza Strip, the focus of
weapons smuggling for Palestinian insurgency groups.
Representatives of Israel's army, navy and air force will meet their
counterparts this year. A schedule of meetings could be drafted over
the next few months.

Israeli Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz relayed the Egyptian agreement
during the visit to Sharm e-Sheik on March 10. Mofaz met Mubarak and
Tantawi and discussed cooperation in Israeli-Palestinian peace efforts
as well as a joint approach toward securing the Egyptian-Israeli and
Egyptian-Gaza borders. Egypt has proposed sending 750 police commandos
and armored vehicles to help patrol the Gaza border.

"The talks will have a real result on the ground," Mofaz said. "We
reached an understanding regarding everything related to the
deployment [of troops], coordination and the fact that this force must
be task-oriented against the smuggling."

Since the 1979 peace agreement, Egypt and Israel have engaged in
low-level security cooperation. For years, Egypt's military refused to
meet its Israeli counterpart, a situation that changed under U.S.
urging in the late 1990s.
