Egypt tightens security at Suez Canal

CAIRO Egyptian authorities have increased security measures to
prevent an Al Qaida attack on the Suez Canal.
Egyptian officials said authorities have imposed new restrictions to
ensure protection of ships using the canal. The measures would ban the
approach of fishing vessels near the canal.

The measures are also meant to protect ships in or at the entrances to
the Suez Canal, officials said. The measures were formulated last year
before a recent alert throughout the Middle East of an Al
Qaida-aligned attack.
Authorities have not raised the level of alert around the Suez Canal.
But ships would be banned from sounding their horns between Ismailia
and Port Said.

The Suez Canal links the Mediterranean with the Red Sea and attracted
revenues of $3 billion last year. Some 16,700 vessels used the canal
in 2004, an increase of 7 percent over the previous year.

Fishing boats would also be banned from operating in the area of the
Suez Canal and particularly along shipping routes.
Officials said these rules had been relaxed over the past few years.
In 2004, the United States warned of an Al Qaida attack on oil tankers
that moved through the Suez Canal. But officials said there has not
been a major threat of such an attack.

Egypt has also tightened security restrictions along roads leading to
the canal. The restrictions ban all vehicles that do not belong to the
Suez Canal Authority.

Another measure is to increase inspections of boats that anchor in
Egypt's ports, including Port Said, Ismailia and Suez.
Egypt has increased transit fees for ships using the Suez Canal by 3
percent in 2005, the first since 1995. Ships that carry military
equipment were required to pay a 25 percent increase.
