Nine dead in US military plane crash in Albania ISN SECURITY WATCH (01/04/05) - Nine US military personnel are believed to have been killed when a US military transport plane crashed in a mountainous area of central Albania on Thursday, Albanian officials said. The US military personnel were on a training mission, according to officials. Four bodies were found early on Friday, media reports said. The Pentagon said a search was under way for the C-130 Hercules plane, but poor weather was hampering search efforts. The plane had taken off from Tirana's Rinas airport and crashed on the Driza Mountain in the district of Gramsh, southeast of the capital, Tirana, Albanian Defense Ministry spokesman Agim Doci said in a statement. The US C-130 Hercules was based at Mildenhall Airbase in Britain. Pentagon spokesman Jim Turner said he had no word on the crew's status. Albanian army chief-of-staff, Lieutenant-General Pellumb Qazimi, said the transport plane was taking part in a joint Albanian-US military exercise. Albanian News24 television reported that the location of the crash was remote and hard to reach, adding that a helicopter had been seen circling the area. It is the second crash of a US military aircraft in Albania. Two US pilots died when their Apache helicopter crashed in Albania on 5 May 1999 while on a night-time training mission in preparation for possible use in the Kosovo conflict.
