The Islamic Council of WA is working with the Muslim Women's Support Centre to create Perth's first sharia court to settle disputed divorces, as currently Muslims must travel abroad to get a judgment under Islamic law. The Federal Government has rejected the idea, saying it only recognises secular law. The Islamic Council says the court will not interfere with Australian law, but would help to fulfil the legal requirements of Islamic law.
