ZAMBOANGA, Philippines (AFP) - The Philippines and the United States will
hold joint anti-terror exercises next week in the southern island of
Basilan, a hotbed of al-Qaeda-linked Muslim Abu Sayyaf militants, officials
said.

At least 1,000 Filipino soldiers will take part in the "Balance Piston 05-3"
exercises, which will last until the last week of April, the US embassy
said.

It did not say how many US forces will join, but said the contingent would
include Special Operations Forces. They will be training their counterparts
in medical evacuation missions and small unit tactics.

The mission will also include civic action programs, it said.

"The exercise would further enhance the skills and capability of our
soldiers," said Philippine airforce spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Susthenes
Valcorta.

The event was kickstarted Wednesday by paratroopers from both sides who
parachuted from a C-130 military cargo airplane to the tightly-guarded Edwin
Andrews Air Base in the southern city of Zamboanga.

The Abu Sayyaf is a small group of self-styled Islamic militants blamed for
the Philippines' deadliest bombing attacks. They have also kidnapped dozens
of foreigners in recent years, including three Americans in 2001, two of
whom later died.

Washington and Manila have linked the group to the al-Qaeda network of
terror mastermind Osama
