Considering all of the rhetoric lately from far right religious groups
about "chastising" judges and the recent plea bargain by Rudolph, the
Atlanta Olympics bomber, it is probably only a matter of time before
some folks smite some infidel judges about the neck...or other body
parts.

Sacramento Courts Getting More Security
High-Profile Incidents Prompt Security Change

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sacramento courts are adding more bailiffs this
month after a series of high-profile attacks against judges around the
country.

Some of Sacramento's civil courtrooms have never had bailiffs, and
yet, they can be the most dangerous places for judges who make
decisions about emotional issues like child custody and money.

Judge Tom Cecil presides over a Sacramento courtroom. He now has more
force as he makes his decisions because a new, armed bailiff watches
over the proceedings.

"Every day we make half the people who appear in front of us permanent
enemies and the other half temporary friends," Cecil said.

Sacramento courts are adding nine new bailiffs and a security officer,
and it couldn't come at a more sensitive time. Last month in Atlanta,
a defendant overpowered a bailiff and allegedly used her weapon to
kill a judge. A Chicago judge came home to find her mother and husband
murdered. And another man is accused of threatening to kill the judge
who removed Terri Schiavo's feeding tube.

"I had someone threaten to kill me a number of years ago to the point
where my children's schools needed to be notified," Cecil said. He
added that most violence happens in civil courts like his, where
people can react emotionally to losing custody of their children,
property and money.

"You'll find that the most dangerous people, the people who have
created the most havoc, are the people who look just like me and you,
the people that are out of custody, appearing in family law, small
claims court, civil cases. They're not the criminals, but they're the
ones who engage in the most violent activities," Cecil said.

In Sacramento, criminal courts have been staffed with both armed
deputies and unarmed court attendants. The officers who transport
inmates do not carry weapons.

"They're not armed because they're in close proximity with the
defendant who is in custody, and the potential there is to be
overpowered and have a weapon free in the courtroom," said Sacramento
County Sheriff's Department spokesman Capt. Bill Johnson.

Cecil said he feels safer with a weapon and a watchful eye in his
civil courtroom.

"For the most part, you're dealing with non-jury settings. So, it's
not a question of who do you blame. You know who to blame. You blame
the judge," Cecil said.

Some of the newly hired bailiffs will be staffing the new juvenile
courthouse that opens later this spring.
