US starts offensive near Iraq's border with Syria

ISN SECURITY WATCH (09/05/05) - US forces in Iraq have killed around
75 militants during the past 24 hours in a counter-insurgency
offensive near the Syrian border, US military officials told media on
Monday.

The US offensive targeted what the military said was a sanctuary for
foreign insurgents and smugglers in the desert area of Anbar province,
north of the Euphrates River, according to news agencies.
The Chicago Tribune reported on Monday that more than 1,000 US troops
supported by fighter jets and helicopter gunships had attacked
villages in and around city of Obeidi.
News agencies said the offensive was believed to have begun on Sunday
and could last for several days.
The US military did not report on any US casualties sustained during
the offensive.

The commander of US forces in the Gulf, General John Abizaid, earlier
this month accused Syria of ignoring US demands to stop foreign
fighters from crossing the border into Iraq. He also accused Syria of
allowing "terrorists" to operate from Syrian territory.
