Leader calls conservative, reformist factions two flying wings of the
Islamic system

Tehran Times Political Desk

TEHRAN (MNA) -- Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah
Seyyed Ali Khamenei said on Sunday that the conservative and reformist
factions resemble the two flying wings of the Islamic system.
Speaking to a gathering of university professors and students from
Kerman Province in the city of Kerman, the Supreme Leader said that
the existence of two political factions loyal to the Constitution can
foster a competitive atmosphere and promote progress in the country.
Factional disputes, as long as they are natural, are not
objectionable, but the enemy is pursuing a greater objective through
attempting to intensify disputes, that is, to create dissension in the
Islamic system, Ayatollah Khamenei explained.

"The enemy's project is to provoke clashes between the two opposing
ideologies at the apogee of the system. Some internal forces have
moved in line with this approach and put great pressure on (President
Mohammad) Khatami, but he did not succumb to this pressure because of
his spirituality and wisdom," the Supreme Leader stated.

He referred to opposition toward the issue of combating corruption
during the sixth Majlis as a small example of the enemy's efforts to
create discord and a state of suspension in the Islamic Republic.
"Everyone should remain vigilant toward this conspiracy," he stressed.
The Supreme Leader noted that the enemies accuse the Islamic system of
trying to homogenize the country's ruling body.

"If what they mean by this accusation is that the system wants one
faction to rule, this is completely wrong. "What we want is to prevent
dissension in the country and (about) the system's principles, and
like any other place in the world, we will not allow those who are
against the Constitution and the Islamic system to assume the
country's top posts."

Ayatollah Khamenei refuted the idea of political opposition between
the conservative and reformist factions. "It is not reformism but
irresponsibility and unprincipled behavior that stand in contrast to
conservatism and not conservatism but corruption that runs contrary to
reformism."

The correct path is "reformist conservatism", he observed. "We have to
reform our methods constantly while maintaining our principles. This
is the real meaning of reformism, but in the Americans' point of view,
reformism means resisting Islam and the Islamic system."
Elsewhere in his remarks, the Supreme Leader said that it is the
people's right and duty to take part in the upcoming presidential
election, noting that the enemies are attempting to prevent Iran from
holding the election. "If they fail to attain their goal this time, as
was the case in the seventh Majlis elections, the enemies will level
all kinds of accusations against Iran, but these efforts will also be
useless."

He noted that adopting a completely legalistic view on the issue of
the candidates' qualifications is essential. "The enemy is opposed to
an enthusiastic and successful election in Iran, but the Iranian
nation is capable of holding a good election and God willing the
upcoming June 17 presidential election will be one of the best elections."

Ayatollah Khamenei criticized certain people for accusing the Iranian
nation of accepting despotism and lacking political and intellectual
maturity. "Some people have announced that the Islamic system goes
halfway toward democracy, but efforts should not be made to satisfy
the Westerners by leveling such accusations against the system and
nation."
