ANKARA - Turkish authorities have detained 10 people on suspicion of belonging to a banned Islamist group, the state Anatolian news agency said on Wednesday. The 10 are believed to be members of a group known as the Hizb-ut Tahrir, which in Arabic means 'Party of Liberation'. Those detained chanted illegal slogans at a rally in Ankara last weekend to protest against a recent crackdown on demonstrators by the Uzbek government, Anatolian said. Police found a large number of Hizb-ut Tahrir pamphlets, books, brochures and compact discs at the suspects' homes. It was not immediately clear whether the detainees belonged to a purely domestic outfit or had links to an international Islamist group of the same name, which wants to create a pan-Islamic state in central Asia. That group, based in London, was blamed by Uzbekistan for suicide bombings last year targeting the U.S. and Israeli embassies in Tashkent. It denied involvement and said it abhorred violence. Witnesses say about 500 people, including women and children, were killed when Uzbek troops fired on a protest in the eastern Uzbek town of Andizhan on May 13. Uzbek President Islam Karimov said 169 were killed, most of them Islamic extremist 'bandits'. Copyright 2005 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
