http://www.intelligence.org.il/eng/sib/5_05/mudeiras.htm Special Information Bulletin Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center at the Center for Special Studies (C.S.S) May, 2005 Response of the Palestinian Authority to the live broadcast of Sheik Mudeiras' anti-Semitic sermon on Palestinian television (Follow-up of our May 19 bulletin) Sheikh Muhammad Jamal Abu Hunoud : the Palestinian Authority's moderate answer to hate-mongering Sheikh Ibrahim Mudeiras? On Friday, May 20, 2005, a week after sheikh Ibrahim Mudeiras delivered a venomous anti-Semitic sermon, Palestinian television has suspended (temporarily?) its live broadcasts of his preaching. Sheikh Mudeiras was replaced by sheikh Muhammad Jamal Abu Hunoud , who also preaches in the Zayyid Aal Nahian mosque in Gaza . His sermon did not contain hate-mongering elements and he focused on the positive aspects of the Qur'an, stressing that the it advocates justice and equality among people. Muhammad Jamal Abu Hunoud, who in charge of Qur'an broadcasts within the Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs and, has in the past given voice to the main stream of Palestinian leadership. His sermons often revolve around Al-Aqsa mosque and the need for national unity. It is unclear if Abu Hunoud's current appearance on television is an expression of the Palestinian Authority's decision to take away sheikh Mudeiras' stage, as demanded by Nabil Sha'ath, Palestinian Minister of Information, after the broadcast of his last hate-mongering sermon. It should be remembered that during the Abu Mazen era, sheikh Mudeiras did not broadcast for a period of two weeks, after which Palestinian television reinstated his on-the-air preaching. It should be noted in that context that on May 21, 2005, in an interview with Al-Shabab ("youth") radio,1 Nabil Sha'ath said that Palestinian television would shortly begin broadcasting Friday sermons from Al-Aqsa instead of Gaza . The point of such a change, if it in fact occurs, may indicate an increase in Palestinian Authority supervision of the sermons broadcast by Palestinian television, even if the Temple Mount mosques are a permanent source of anti-Israeli hate propaganda . Another possible PA goal, with no relation to sheikh Mudeiras, may be to make the PA's connection to Al-Aqsa mosque on the Temple Mount more conspicuous . ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- 1 A local radio station which broadcasts from Gaza and is identified with Fatah.
