Counter-terror spending to hit $251bn
>From correspondents in Washington
26may05

TOTAL spending by world governments to fight terrorism will be about $US191
billion ($251.12 billion) this year, a study says.

And that amount is likely to triple within a decade.

The study, released today by Washington's Homeland Security Research
Corporation, says about 44 per cent - $US84 billion - will be spent by the
US.

In 2010, according to HSRC's estimates, $US350 billion will be spent
fighting terrorism, with 36 per cent of that by the US.

The figure will exceed $US517 billion - 35 per cent from the US - by 2015.

HSRC experts added up estimated spending by the US Homeland Security
Department and that of Homeland Defence, using the so-called "persistent
tension" hypothesis that envisages terrorist attacks without a major event
equivalent to or worse than the September 11, 2001, attacks.

"We at HSRC forecast that, taking into account the global terror threat in
which a few determined terrorists using low-tech means can inflict
devastating damage, the probability of realising a Scenario II situation (a
major series of attacks) during the 2006-2015 period is very high and should
be seriously considered," HSRC president Dan Inbar said.
