New reports of China-Indonesia strategic cooperation The governments of China and Indonesia have agreed to develop short-range guided missiles, the official Indonesian news agency Antara reported last week. Research and Technology Minister Kusmayanto Kadiman said the missile cooperation concept had been discussed since 2002 and finally agreed to last month during the meeting between Chinese President Hu Jintao and President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in Jakarta. The deal is expected to be concluded during the visit to Beijing by Yudhoyono in June or July. The missiles will have a range of 9-19 miles and appear to be guided artillery rockets. The missile cooperation comes amid reports that China is building a submarine base on an Indonesian island. U.S. intelligence officials have not been able to confirm the submarine base but said that it may have been part of a secret agreement between the two countries. Beijing has been seeking closer ties with Jakarta as part of its strategic effort to protect sea-lanes used for shipping oil from the Middle East to China. China also has offered to sell battlefield rockets to Malaysia. "Any time you are teaching rocket technology, that's serious," said one military specialist. "The Chinese are clearly starting small so they can play for bigger concessions for bigger toys."
