Police find ETA bomb workshop in France

MADRID, June 1 (Reuters) - French police uncovered a bomb workshop in
the apartment of a suspected member of Basque separatist group ETA who
was arrested in March, Spanish authorities said on Wednesday.

The apartment, in the southwestern French town of Saint-Gaudens, was
used by Jose Segurola Querejeta who police regard as a lieutenant of the
outlawed guerrilla group, the Spanish Interior Ministry said in a
statement.

Police had been hunting for the arms cache for months following
Querejeta's arrest together with another ETA suspect.

Among the articles seized were materials for making explosives,
detonators, timers, soldering equipment and aluminium dust -- used to
magnify the blast from explosives.

The statement did not say when the workshop was discovered.

ETA, listed as a terrorist group by the European Union, has killed
around 850 people since 1968 in a campaign for an independent Basque
state in southwest France and northern Spain.

The Spanish government has pledged to negotiate with the group if it
lays down its arms. ETA has been weakened in recent years by scores of
high profile arrests.
