U.S. intelligence closely monitoring transition in Saudi leadership Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz has solidified his control over the ruling family in Saudi Arabia amid rumors that the health of King Fahd has deteriorated. Intelligence sources said Abdullah recently edged out other members of the ruling family who are less pro-Western and more orientated to Islamist radicals. Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz As part of the power solidification, Abdullah may recall Saudi Arabia's ambassador to the United States, Prince Bandar bin Sultan, to a senior post in the ruling royal family. U.S. intelligence agencies are closely following the leadership of Saudi Arabia and fear that radical Islamists in the oil-rich kingdom are seeking to oust the Saudi monarchy and install an Islamist regime. The United States is highly dependent on Saudi oil and social instability in the kingdom could threaten U.S. oil supplies. State Department counselor Philip Zelikow said in a speech last week that Saudi Arabia needs to reform its political system. "We recognize that change must come from within if it is to endure, and must be based on the strong cultural foundations of Saudi society," he said. "Nevertheless, we have seen the tragic consequences of deferring the process of change." Zelikow said that while Saudi Arabia is wealthy, "it faces major demographic challenges and societal factors that have fed extremism." ------------------------ Yahoo!
