Madrid says terrorism a problem for all

SINGAPORE (AP) - Recent car bomb explosions in Madrid haven't doomed
the Spanish capital's chances in a July 6 vote to decide who'll host
the 2012 Summer Games, bid leader Feliciano Mayoral said Thursday.
"Terrorism is an international problem. All the bids in the running
of the 2012 have a problem with terrorists," Mayoral said as he
arrived in Singapore, venue for next week's vote by the
International Olympic Committee.

A car bomb exploded near a proposed Olympic venue Sunday - the
second such bomb to go off near a proposed Games staging area in
four months. No one was injured in the blast and damage was minimal.
"Nothing happened in Spain. The security is excellent," Mayoral
insisted.

Madrid is largely viewed as an underdog to Paris and London in the
race to host the Summer Games. The other bidding cities are New York
and Moscow.

Mayoral insisted his city was not lagging behind in any areas that
IOC members will consider before casting their votes.
"We are in very tough running with the best cities in the whole
world but this criteria is created by the media. What is most
important is the opinion of the IOC," said Mayoral, who had to wait
half an hour to retrieve his bags, which came out last, at the
airport carousel.

Madrid is the only one of the European candidates that has never
held the Olympics. Rivals London and Paris have both staged the
Games twice.

The only bid leader yet to arrive is New York's Dan Doctoroff, who
arrives in Singapore early Friday.
