Villaraigosa Briefed On City's Terrorism Preparedness

Two days before taking office, Mayor-elect Antonio Villaraigosa
received a two-hour briefing Wednesday from police officials on the
city's preparedness to withstand a terrorism attack.
Villaraigosa met with Los Angeles police Chief William Bratton and
other LAPD counter-terrorism experts, and he came out of the session
expressing confidence the city was well-prepared.
"They gave me great comfort in knowing that we are on top of the
situation here in Los Angeles," Villaraigosa said outside LAPD's
Parker Center headquarters.

Bratton told reporters the city has been proactive on terrorism
issues, recognizing that Los Angeles could be viewed as a prime
target because of its size.
"He (Villaraigosa) used the comment, in terms of the presentation,
that it was sobering -- sobering in the sense of the threats that
are very real," Bratton said. "But also as he has just referenced, I
think he has confidence, as I do, that Los Angeles is as prepared as
any American city, maybe more so because we have been prioritizing,
have been focusing energy, resources and personnel on this issue."
Bratton cautioned, however, that more resources could be needed in
the future to keep the city safe.
John Miller, the LAPD's counter-terrorism chief, said trying to
prevent an attack is a daunting task because it is hard to prepare
for all possible scenarios.
"We see many different types (of terrorist activity)," Miller
said. "We see the potential for a dirty bomb that was interdicted in
London; the potential for a major chemical attack that was stopped
in Jordan; the successful attack against trains in Madrid. There is
no one model, and there is no one priority."
