Iran seeks to resolve border disputes with Gulf neighbors

ABU DHABI — Iran and Kuwait have begun efforts to resolve their long-
standing border dispute.
Iran also has border disputes with Iraq, Turkey and the United Arab
Emirates. The UAE has accused Iran of occupying three islets in the
northern Gulf and Teheran has rebuffed calls for arbitration.
Kuwaiti officials said the dispute concerns the territorial waters
of the two countries and has hampered coast guard missions and
efforts to explore for crude oil and natural gas in the northern
Gulf.
The two countries discussed the need to demarcate their maritime
borders during a meeting of Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Mohammed Al
Sabah and his Iranian counterpart, Kamal Kharazi. Kuwait has been
pressing for the conclusion of the demarcation effort and Iranian
acknowledgement of the maritime borders.
"Kuwait is a small country and worries about its borders," Mohammed
said. "We worry about the border issue and hope that the Iranian
brothers would try to resolve the issue within months."
Kuwait has expressed concern over Iran's nuclear reactor project at
Bushehr, located about 200 kilometers from the sheikdom. Iran and
Kuwait have also signed security and military cooperation accords.
