No defensive measures are. One has to attack the source of Islamic
terrorism: Islam.

Body scanners are not a 'silver bullet'

MICHAEL HOWIE

BODY scanners could help prevent a repeat of Thursday's attacks on London's
public transport system but only as part of a wider package of security
measures, a leading computer scientist last night warned.

Anthony Finhelstein, head of the computer science department at University
College London, said there was no "silver bullet" that would make public
transport less prone to attack.

A director at one security firm said body scanners that can see through
clothes using millimetre-wave technology should be introduced to beef up
security.

"The mass screening of people on the Tube is something that is clearly going
to have to be addressed," said Neil Fisher, director of security solutions
at high-tech UK firm QinetiQ.

Mr Finhelstein said a wider package of measures was required, such as
improved CCTV coverage, increased ticket traceability and more police
officers in Tube stations.

"There is no single technological solution, no silver bullet.
Millimetre-wave scanners and explosion sensors won't help on their own. They
can only make a difference if they are part of the wider answer.

"Ultimately, a determined terrorist will always be able to attack any open
system."

A Transport for London spokesman said:

"The technology that allows both searching and efficient movement of people
on the London Underground simply does not exist."

"Fair Use" criteria established in Section 107 of the Copyright Act of 1976.
The principle of "Fair Use" was established as law by Section 107 of The
Copyright Act of 1976. "Fair Use" legally eliminates the need to obtain
permission or pay royalties for the use of previously copyrighted materials
if the purposes of display include "criticism, comment, news reporting,
teaching, scholarship, and research." Section 107 establishes four criteria
for determining whether the use of a work in any particular case qualifies
as a "fair use". A work used does not necessarily have to satisfy all four
criteria to qualify as an instance of "fair use". Rather, "fair use" is
determined by the overall extent to which the cited work does or does not
substantially satisfy the criteria in their totality. If you wish to use
copyrighted material for purposes of your own that go beyond 'fair use,' you
must obtain permission from the copyright owner. For more information go to:
