Birmingham police issue threat warning Press Association Saturday July 9, 2005 West Midlands Police tonight confirmed they had ordered the evacuation of large parts of Birmingham city centre following the receipt of intelligence suggesting a possible threat. Earlier, a force spokeswoman had said no vehicles would be allowed past the inner ring road. "We understand the impact this [the road closures] will have on people and will keep the situation under review and advise the public appropriately," she explained. "Our response needs to be proportionate in the actions we are taking and informing the public. "We are not closing bars, restaurants or clubs but we are asking for them to be searched and for people entering the premises to be searched." A woman who works in a bar in the centre of Birmingham told Sky News she had to travel down back streets to reach the middle of the city where her job is based following the security alert. She said: "I did a massive detour which took nearly an hour and just managed to get into the city centre. "We are right in the city centre by the library and that's apparently somewhere near where the bomb scare's been happening. There's not many police where we are now." She added: "They haven't told us anything at all yet, the police. We're just carrying on as normal as we possibly can." <http://www.guardian.co.uk/terrorism/story/0,12780,1525465,00.html> http://www.guardian.co.uk/terrorism/story/0,12780,1525465,00.html _____ FAIR USE NOTICE: All original content and/or articles and graphics in this message are copyrighted, unless specifically noted otherwise. "Fair Use" legally eliminates the need to obtain permission or pay royalties for the use of previously copyrighted materials if the purposes of display include "criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research." Section 107 establishes four criteria for determining whether the use of a work in any particular case qualifies as a "fair use". A work used does not necessarily have to satisfy all four criteria to qualify as an instance of "fair use". Rather, "fair use" is determined by the overall extent to which the cited work does or does not substantially satisfy the criteria in their totality.
