Think twice about going to work if transport is a problem, say the police
By Adam Luck

COMMUTERS were advised by police not to go to work today if they think their
journey will encounter problems.
A Metropolitan Police spokesman said there would be continuing problems with
London’s transport system that would make travelling difficult.

“If people think they may have a problem getting to work they should give
serious consideration whether or not to come in,” the spokesman added.

The advice echoed Transport for London (TfL), which urged drivers not to
make any unnecessary journeys into the city centre, despite dropping the £8
congestion charge for the second day.

TfL said last night that there would be near normal services on the
Bakerloo, Central, East London, Jubilee, Northern, Victoria and Waterloo &
City lines; restricted services on the District Line but no service from
High St Kensington to Edgware Road and Olympia, and a reduced service from
Wimbledon to High St Kensington. On the Metropolitan Line there will be no
service from Baker Street to Aldgate and a near normal service north of
Baker Street. On the Piccadilly Line services will run:

Heathrow to Hyde Park Corner (every 5 mins), Acton Town to Rayners Lane
shuttle (every 10 mins), Cockfosters to Arnos Grove (every 10 mins).
Replacement bus services will operate from Arnos Grove to Finchley Central
for transfer to the Northern Line.

There will be no service on the Circle and Hammersmith & City lines. TfL
said it was hopeful of operating a replacement bus service along the
northern section of the Circle Line. London Buses will attempt to run a full
service. Only those routes using the roads around Russell Square, Woburn
Place and Aldgate High Street, which are expected to be closed for up to the
next 48 hours, will be diverted. Regular security checks will continue on
each bus and at all bus stations and garages for the foreseeable future.

Commuters were advised to call the TfL customer information line, 0207-222
1234, or access the TfL website, www.tfl.gov.uk, this morning before making
their journey.

Network Rail said that all mainline rail stations in London would be open
except King’s Cross, where services would be restricted to suburban routes.
The Docklands Light Railway resumed service although Stratford, Canning Town
and Bank stations were closed last night and it was uncertain when they
would reopen. Victoria Coach Station will be open and national coach
services are expected to run normally. Airports said it would be business as
usual, with no expected delays or cancellations at Heathrow, Gatwick or
Stansted.

People were warned by the Royal Mail that postal deliveries could take
longer over the next few days because the attacks had caused substantial
disruption to its distribution network.

Many London schools were expected to be closed today because of concerns
about travelling. Westminster and Camden councils have closed all their
schools for today but both councils anticipated that they will be open on
Monday. Lambeth said some of its schools would be closed. Kensington and
Chelsea said that six schools would be closed today with another four yet to
decide. Southwark said that individual schools would decide whether to open,
depending on the difficulties faced by teachers in getting to work.

In Tower Hamlets, East London, Bishop Challenor School asked parents not to
bring children today. The school acted as an emergency centre yesterday for
people who had been injured in the Aldgate blast.

Schools in Wandsworth, stayed open late yesterday to allow parents, many of
whom work in Central London, time to get back and collect their children.
Southwark, Tower Hamlets and Newham said all schools have been advised to be
open today.
