GAZA, July 10 (Xinhuanet) -- Saraya al-Quds, an armed offshoot
of the Islamic Jihad (Holy War), declared Sunday that one of its top
militant leaders has escaped an assassination attempt near his
homein northern Gaza city.
A small remote-control bomb exploded after the militant leader
parked his car and walked toward the door of his house early on
Sunday, the group said, adding that the leader survived the blast.
The group, however, did not reveal the identity of the targeted
leader.
It also claimed that the assassination attempt was plotted by
aPalestinian collaborator with Israel.
There was no immediate word from the Israeli side.
More than 300 Jihad members had been arrested by Israeli troops
in the West Bank during the past three weeks, according to the
group's statistics.
The Israeli army, accusing Jihad of planning a series of armed
and suicide bombing attacks against Israeli targets, has stepped up
security measures in a bid to rein in possible violence during the
coming withdrawal from Gaza and the northern West Bank starting
inmid-August. Enditem
