Muslim who hates America gets life By Francis Harris in Washington (Filed: 15/07/2005) A Muslim scholar who "hates the United States and wants to destroy it" has been jailed for life after he encouraged followers to take up arms. Ali al-Timimi, who lived in the plush Virginian region of Fairfax County, close to Washington, called on his followers to join the jihad against America five days after the September 11 attacks. Some of the men heeded his words and booked themselves onto a paintball course, apparently believing that this would help prepare them for the coming struggle. Some went abroad to seek terrorist training, although none heeded Timimi's call to fight in Afghanistan. Gordon Kromberg, the chief prosecutor, said at court in Alexandria: "Timimi hates the United States and calls for its destruction. He's allowed to do that in this country. He's not allowed to solicit treason. That's what he did. He deserves every day of the time he will serve." Timimi was convicted of conspiracy, seeking to aid the Taliban, soliciting others to wage war against America, soliciting treason and aiding and abetting the use of firearms and explosives. In court, he compared himself to Socrates, the Greek philosopher who drank hemlock rather than face exile. Judge Leonie M Brinkema said: "Terrorist camps are an essential part of the new terrorism. People of goodwill need to do whatever they can to stop that." She described the sentence, which is fixed by statute, as "very draconian". Followers of Timimi wept as he was sentenced and described him as a good and peaceful man.
