Web-posted Saturday, July 16, 2005 Editorial: Muslim silence on terrorism remains loud and deafening Opinion Here's a major problem with the war on terrorism. There always seems to be a "but." The Dallas Morning News interviewed a neighbor of a suspected suicide bomber in the London bombings Wednesday. The neighbor, identified only as "Samina," 23, said the terrorist bombings were "not Islamically right." Then comes the "but." Samina offered this grotesque explanation: "When a Muslim dies in a bombing in Afghanistan or Iraq, does anybody care? No. They don't even bother to identify the bodies." The Washington Post ran a story Thursday that identified the bodies. Amjad Kudeer was a young Iraqi boy, one of 13 children killed when a suicide bomber drove his bomb-laden vehicle into a crowd taking candy from U.S. soldiers in Baghdad. There is no "but" that can justify despicable acts of murder, whether it be in Baghdad or London. If the war on terrorism is ever going to be successful, Muslims who have seen their religion - indeed, their way of life - hijacked and warped by crazed zealots must stop making excuses, stop trying to explain acts of terrorism. There have been few public condemnations, especially on a global scale. Do people care that Muslims are dying? Yes. "But" it is difficult when those who claim to adhere to the Muslim faith do the killing while others remain silent. -------------------------- Want to discuss this topic?
