Slouching towards Hell: the London bombers caught together on camera

Police last night released the first photograph to show the four
London bombers together on their way to kill and maim on London's
transport network.
The picture, taken from CCTV footage, shows the terrorists carrying
rucksacks containing 10lb bombs as they entered Luton station at
7.21am on the day of the attacks - looking like any casual
travellers. Moments after the image was captured they caught a
Thameslink train to King's Cross, from where they fanned out on
their devastating mission.

Less than 90 minutes later three of the bombs were detonated on Tube
trains within seconds of each other - at around 8.50am. The fourth
bomb exploded almost an hour later on a No 30 bus in Tavistock
Square.
The police confirmed, for the first time, the bombers' identities as
Mohammed Khan, Hasib Hussain, Shehzad Tanweer and Germaine Lindsay.
Officers said that they had "no plans" to release similar CCTV
pictures taken at King's Cross, prompting speculation that they
might show the "fifth man", thought to be the bombers' controller.
Tony Blair yesterday pledged his determination to tackle Islamic
extremists by confronting their "barbaric ideas" and "evil
ideology". "We must pull this up by the roots," he said in a speech
to Labour's national policy forum, in which he called for "a battle
of ideas, hearts and minds" on British soil and abroad.
"This is the battle that must be won, a battle not just about the
terrorist methods but their views," he said. "Not just their
barbaric acts, but their barbaric ideas. Not only what they do but
what they think. In the end, it is by the power of argument, debate,
true religious faith and true legitimate politics that we will
defeat this threat. That means not just arguing against their
terrorism, but their politics and their perversion of religious
faith.
"It means exposing as the rubbish it is, the propaganda about
America and its allies wanting to punish Muslims or eradicate Islam.
It means explaining why the suppression of women and the disdain for
democracy is wrong."
Mr Blair said that he would not allow terrorists to "play on our
tolerance and good nature". He said "no sane person would ever
negotiate with them" and such terrorism "cannot be beaten except by
confronting it - without compromise and without delusion".
His speech marks a hardening of the Government's approach. The
Sunday Telegraph has learnt that the Prime Minister is drawing up
plans for a new state-sponsored training course for Muslim clerics
which will promote moderate Islam.
Mr Blair will tell Muslim leaders this week that mosques must either
tighten their screening procedures or face outside regulation.
At present, imams are taught to varying standards by individual
mosques. About 1,800 of Britain's 3,000 imams come from abroad,
mainly from Pakistan, and there are no regulations in place to
verify their qualifications.
Mr Blair will meet the Muslim Council of Britain on Tuesday to
discuss tightening vetting procedures and licensing "backroom"
mosques and classrooms where children are taught. The Home Office is
working on an accredited qualification for Muslims who want to
practise ministry and a standardised assessment of "civic knowledge".
This follows growing concern that the four British-born bombers
might have been influenced by extremists at their mosques in
Yorkshire and Buckinghamshire, and during visits to Afghanistan and
Pakistan. Sadiq Khan, the Muslim Labour MP for Tooting, said: "The
Muslim communities are not reaching those people who they need to
engage with and win their hearts and minds.
"What leads someone to do this? The rewards they are told they will
get in the hereafter - it is incumbent on Muslims to tell them that
nowhere in Islam does it say this and in fact what you will get is
hellfire."
As police continued to search houses linked to the London bombers,
officers said they were still investigating the possibility that the
bombers might have been duped by al-Qa'eda controllers into killing
themselves along with dozens of Tube and bus passengers, to ensure
that they would not "sing" if caught.
The houses being searched include one in Leeds linked to Magdi El-
Nashar, an Egyptian biochemist who has been arrested in Cairo but is
protesting his innocence. Investigators said that one bomber, Khan,
recently visited Pakistan where - like Tanweer and Hussain, - he is
suspected of meeting al-Qa'eda operatives.
The Sunday Telegraph has learned that one of the Army's most secret
intelligence gathering organisations has been deployed on the
streets in an attempt to prevent further attacks. The newly created
Special Reconnaissance Regiment will work closely with MI5.
