In the interview broadcast on Friday, Basayev admitted he is a terrorist and promised to make each Russia feel the impact of the war in Chechnya. He said he is plotting more deadly attacks on civilians. The interview roused negative reactionindignation among Russian top politicians. Some of them blamed the U.S. administration of double standards and supporting terrorism in Russia. The Foreign Ministry summoned U.S. chargé d'affaires ad interim, Daniel Russel, to express its indignation. U.S. Ambassador to Russia, Alexander Vershbow, has just left his office, and the new one is not appointed yet. The Foreign Ministry sent its protest to the television company several hours before the interview was broadcast. After the interview, the U.S. Department of State made a statement calling Basayev an international terrorist who will be arrested immediately if found at the U.S. territory. The interview was conducted by well-known Russian journalist Andrei Babitsky who was earlier accused by the Russian authorities of links to terrorists. Basayev claimed responsibility for the 2004 school attack in which gunmen held more than 1,000 hostages for nearly three days in the Russian town of Beslan. The raid ended in gunfire and explosions, killing more 330 people, mostly children. "It's not the children who are responsible," Basayev said. But he added: "Responsibility is with the whole Russian nation... If the war doesn't come to each of them individually, it will never stop in Chechnya."
