US may deny Iran chief visa
August 10, 2005
WASHINGTON: The US has responded to Iran's revival of its nuclear program by
signalling it might deny Iran's President a visa to attend a meeting of the
UN General Assembly in New York next month.
The move came as the European Union said Iran's resumption of nuclear fuel
work at its uranium conversion plant at Isfahan had created a "grave crisis"
that required a united international response.
France, Britain and Germany, which headed the negotiations with Iran on
behalf of the EU, called on Tehran to reverse course and return to talks on
its nuclear program. The trio called an emergency meeting of the UN's atomic
watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, in Vienna overnight to
discuss the way forward.
The US and the EU left little doubt they would take Iran to the UN Security
Council, recommending economic sanctions if Iran does not back down.
French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy said Tehran had deliberately
provoked the crisis. "The international community will react and will decide
the response to give," he said. "I hope it will be united in the face of
this grave crisis deliberately provoked by Iran."

The decision to reopen the mothballed uranium processing plant at Isfahan
came after the installation of surveillance equipment there by the UN
watchdog and Mahmood Ahmadinejad, the Islamic republic's hardline new
President, taking office last week.
The US State Department said Washington might deny a visa to Mr Ahmadinejad
to attend the UN meeting in New York because of his reputed role in the 1979
hostage drama after Iranian students stormed the US embassy in Tehran. The
warning came despite an agreement to let officials of member states visit
the UN headquarters.
State Department spokesman Adam Ereli said concern that Mr Ahmadinejad was
linked to the hostage-taking of US diplomats at the embassy was central to
judging his application for a visa.
Mr Ereli acknowledged the US had an agreement with the UN to allow officials
of member states to travel to its headquarters on UN business.
"We also take very seriously information that someone has been involved in
hostage-taking of American citizens in contravention of international law
and international practice," he said.
The US says Mr Ahmadinejad was a leader in the student movement behind the
embassy takeover and is trying to determine whether he was himself a
hostage-taker, which he and those who took part deny.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi said on Sunday: "We hope
the Americans will not make such a big mistake. If the Americans cannot host
the UN guests, they do not deserve to have the UN headquarters in their
country."
US officials said no head of state had ever been denied a visa to attend
such a meeting.
Iranian technicians at the facility outside Isfahan yesterday resumed the
intricate process of converting uranium that Iran says is intended to yield
energy, but which the West worries is a precursor to the development of
nuclear weapons.
Iran has rejected a compromise deal tabled by Britain, France and Germany to
allow Iran to retain a civilian nuclear capacity but bar it from producing
the enriched uranium used in atomic bombs. Iran suspended this element of
its nuclear program under an agreement with the EU's big three in November.
