Mexico Releases Two Egyptians Detained at Cancun Airport
The Associated Press
Published: Aug 9, 2005

MEXICO CITY (AP) - Two Egyptians who were detained last week at the airport
in the Caribbean resort of Cancun have been released after Mexican officials
found their papers to be in order, the National Migration Institute
announced Tuesday.

Mexican police had said they detained the men after one appeared on a U.S.
travel-restriction list. The U.S. Embassy on Tuesday referred all questions
about the men to Mexican authorities, who did not give more information.

The Mexican government in June blamed the United States for confusion
leading to the detention of a Lebanese-born British citizen falsely
suspected of terrorist links.

Officials have long expressed concerns that terrorists might use Mexico or
Central America to stage an attack on the United States. But there has been
little hard evidence that anyone was linked to a terrorist groups might be
in the region.
