Of course Islam is under threat: from globalization and the modern world;
its rigidity, its death cult, its mistreatment of women, its intolerance for
other religions, its advocacy for holy war world domination are all
threatened.

No evidence to confirm-Bangladesh having int'l terrorist links: Fair

Monday August 15 2005 10:32:04 AM BDT

A US analyst of terrorism here on Saturday said the public perception that
Islam is under threat (from its enemies) is a major factor that generates
the support for terrorism as a shield, reports UNB.

"It's not gender, it's not poverty; but most important of all is that those
individuals who perceive that Islam is under threat are many times likely to
support terrorism," said Dr Christine Fair, an officer in the Research and
Studies Programme of the United States Institute of Peace.

Dr Fair, who specializes in South Asian political and military affairs and
has conducted studies on security and terrorism in the region, was talking
on 'Demand and Supply side of International Terrorism' at a meet at the
National Press Club. Centre for Communication, Development and Policy
Studies (CCDPS) and American Center jointly sponsored the function.

Asked about her impression about Bangladesh in terms of presence of
terrorists or link with terrorist outfits, she said she has no impression
about Bangladesh. But she hastened to add, "I know what I am told by the
Indians; I don't have any evidence to confirm. Pictures the Indians are
depicting that I don't have any evidence to. I don't have evidence too that
it is not true."

Dr Fair disagreed with Bangladesh officials' claims that no Bangladeshi
citizen is involved in international terrorist network, saying that an
international organization found at least one among the detainees after
breaking down the identities. Besides, several thousand people went to
Afghanistan, trained and returned. " So the official claim that no
Bangladeshi is involved in international terrorism is not statistically
true," said the US specialist in terrorism study.

Dr Fair however failed to confirm whether that one person is actually
Bangladeshi citizen as she came to know from available information in the
public domain.

The US analyst also referred to a study conducted by a US-based organization
called PEW that reportedly ranked Bangladesh 11th among 14 countries that
support terrorism. She, however, advised the concerned quarters not to give
much significance to this data or statistics.

Rather, she suggested formulation of a universally working definition of
terrorism differentiating criminal elements, insurgent elements and
terrorism. " Every country on board should have one definition of
terrorism."

During her talk, she explained various phenomena of terrorism and their
nature in the contexts of different political, religious and socioeconomic
realities. She also analyzed the reasons behind suicide terrorism to say
that one reason may be "perception of occupation", like Laden's view of US
occupation of Saudi Arabia or perception of Israeli occupation of Palestine.

On Afghanistan affairs during the Taliban times, she said people might have
gone to Afghanistan with multiple purposes and interests-some might went
there for job or protesting Soviet invasion. But she argued that her concern
was that Afghanistan enabled a genuine pan-Islamic military identity to
emerge.

Asked who imparted training in Afghanistan, Dr Fair disclosed that America's
CIA was not involved in the training--it was ISI who accomplished the task.
The US, the Saudi Government and a number of others channeled funds to the
ISI--the US had no independent agency to give training in Afghanistan.

Director of the American Center John Cebra made concluding remarks, saying
that more such discussions would take place with the forthcoming visits of
some US experts and officials to have interactions and exchange of views on
various issues. Executive Director of CCDPS Abu Naser Rajib conducted the
discussion.
