http://www.defensenews.com/story.php?F=1034613&C=mideast Posted 08/15/05 15:53 Zarqawi Aide Killed; Senators Demand Rumsfeld Resign By AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE, WASHINGTON Iraqi security forces have killed a top aide to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the head of the al-Qaida operation in Iraq, who has played a key role in masterminding several high-profile suicide bombings in the country, defense officials confirmed Aug. 14. But the battlefield success hardly impressed two leading U.S. senators, who questioned the Pentagons handling of the situation in Iraq and said they had no more confidence in Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. Abu Zubair, also known as Mohammed Salah Sultan, was gunned down in the northern city of Mosul Aug. 12, when he got caught in an ambush set up by Iraqi security forces, the officials said, confirming a report by Mosul police. No other details of the operation were provided. But officials pointed out Abu Zubair was wearing a suicide belt filled with metal pellets when he was killed. It was not immediately clear whether the suspect intended to become a suicide bomber himself or the belt was to be used by somebody else. Abu Zubair was wanted for his alleged role in organizing a bombing attack on an Iraqi police station in Mosul last month in which five policemen were killed, according to the defense officials. He was believed to be behind several other bombings directed against U.S. forces and their allies, but the officials offered no specifics. They noted, however, that Abu Zubairs death followed the capture of three bombmakers and six foreign fighters by U.S. and Iraqi security forces last week as well as the successful neutralization of 101 improvised explosive devices. Abu Zubairs death, as well as recent captures of terrorists in northern Iraq, is making a difference in coalition and Iraqi security forces efforts to disrupt terrorists operating in this part of the country, Col. Bill Buckner, a spokesman for the multinational force deployed in Iraq, told reporters. He expressed confidence that bombings and other insurgent attacks will not prevent Iraqi democracy. But Sen. Joseph Biden, the leading Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said democracy in Iraq will not happen in my lifetime. He argued that the most the Bush administration could hope for in the violence-torn country was a government that would be able to secure the physical safety of its people and not be a threat to its neighbors. I think Rumsfeld should get his notice on Aug. 15 morning, Biden said as he appeared on NBCs Meet the Press program. Republican Sen. John McCain, a possible presidential candidate in 2008, echoed those sentiments. I dont have confidence in Rumsfeld, he said. ------------------------ Yahoo!
