And the other aircraft he was in communication with could not relay the "Mayday" call? This is still full of logical inconsistencies.
-Bruce 'Mayday' calls from doomed jet Cry on wrong frequency went unheeded, reports say story.steward.afp.jpg <outbind://62-00000000625F35DA9B8E2C43B0A3422CC3CDB74D24DC4501/http://i.a.cn n.net/cnn/2005/WORLD/europe/08/22/greece.crash.mayday/story.steward.afp.jpg> Steward Andreas Prodromou (right) is thought to have sent the Mayday calls. His girlfriend also died. ATHENS, Greece -- A "tired or weakened" man sent two "Mayday" calls from a Cypriot airliner before it mysteriously crashed in Greece, killing all 121 people aboard, according to a preliminary report on the accident by a Greek investigator. The report, released Monday, said an F-16 pilot who was escorting the doomed jetliner reported that the pilot of the craft was not in his seat late into the flight -- and that in the final 10 minutes of the flight, a man sat in the pilot's seat "wearing an oxygen mask" and "tried to send specifically two times the SOS or emergency 'Mayday' signal." But the emergency call was not heard because he was tuned to the wrong frequency, it said. "The tone of his voice indicated that he was a man, tired or weakened," the report said. Greek media reported Athens control tower did not pick up the Mayday warnings because they were transmitted on a wrong frequency. The report confirmed earlier theories that the plane got into trouble after developing a depressurization problem. The report did not identify the man, but investigators have said flight attendant Andreas Prodromou, who had been learning how to fly small planes, was in the cockpit at the time of the crash. The body of a female flight attendant was also found in the wreckage of the cockpit. The report also found that the man in the cockpit had been in communication with other aircraft during the last 30 minutes of the flight. Greek chief investigator Akrivos Tsolakis submitted the initial report to Michael Liapis, the Greek minister of transportation and communication, on the crash of Helios Airways Flight 522. The Boeing 737 crashed August 14 into mountains northeast of Athens, killing all 115 passengers and six crew in Greece and Cyprus's worst air disaster. The plane had flown for two-and-a-half hours without making radio contact, and F-16 fighters scrambled to investigate. Tsolakis said the information for the report was gleaned from the commander in charge of the F-16 pilots, the plane's cockpit voice recorder and its flight data recorder. The report said the plane's pressure system suffered a "technical anomaly or malfunction" that could have had "consequences on the physical situation of the passengers and crew." In his letter sent to Greece's transport ministry, Tsolakis also said the Boeing crashed after the engines stopped. The plane ran out of fuel at 35,000 feet (10,000 meters) after flying for nearly twice the scheduled 90 minutes from Larnaca, in Cyprus, to Athens, a stop on the way to its final destination Prague. "There are indications of technical problems in the pressurization system. ... There is proof that the engines of the plane stopped working because the fuel supply was exhausted, and that this was the final cause of the crash," the report said. Autopsies have found that those crew and passengers whose bodies were examined were alive on impact and did not suffer from carbon monoxide poisoning -- possibly indicating that a lack of oxygen rendered them unconscious. The F-16 pilots reported seeing a co-pilot slumped over in his chair and no main pilot, before the male flight attendant got into the seat. The plane took off at 0607 GMT from Larnaca and about 35 minutes later reported a problem with the air conditioning system but was told to fly on to Athens. Shortly afterwards Cypriot aviation officials failed to communicate with the plane's cockpit at 0637 GMT and informed Athens control tower. Almost an hour later, as the plane neared Athens but still failed to make any contact, two Greek F-16s took off to shadow the plane, which at 0904 GMT crashed into the mountainside. Helios, owned by Libra Holidays Group, a British holiday tour operator, has defended its record but revealed the crashed plane had a previous cabin pressure problem. Last December the plane had to descend swiftly from 34,000 to 11,000 feet on a Warsaw-Larnaca flight, it said. Helios flies to Athens, Greek islands, Dublin, Sofia, Warsaw, Prague, Strasbourg and British airports. On Sunday, Greek Public Order Minister Giorgos Voulgarakis repeated government assurances that the plane had not been shot down. "If this incident had taken place during the Olympics, the chances of it being shot down would have been extremely high," Voulgarakis said in a newspaper interview. Copyright 2005 CNN.
