Mobil Oil depot explosion attempt suspect confirmed AEUP member: police
Addis Ababa, August 23,2005 - The Metropolitan Police Commission says it was
confirmed that one of the two suspects arrested late last Saturday while
attempting to explode a bomb at the main depot of Mobil Oil at what is
locally known as Gotera here in Addis Ababa was the former regime's soldier
and member of the All Ethiopian Unity Party (AEUP).
Police said the two suspects who were under custody were brought to court
yesterday in accordance with the Federal Constitution.
Head of Criminal Investigation Coordination with the Commission, Chief
Inspector Girma Kassa told ENA yesterday that one of the suspects, Shiferaw
Tegegn confessed that he was a soldier in the former regime and currently a
member of AEUP, which is a member party of the Coalition for Unity and
Democracy (CUD).
Shiferaw was planning and conducting a kind of survey around 6:00p.m.
Saturday with the aim of launching a grenade attack on the depot, Inspector
Girma said.
In addition to his confession, a voucher indicating that the suspect paid an
AEUP membership fee for the month of July was found in his pocket, the Chief
Inspector said.
The Chief Inspector added the suspect had brought another individual named
Eshetu Estifanos from Nekempte covering all costs and promising additional
15,000 birr, adding, the two individuals came to the depot area with two F1
bombs.
Chief Inspector Kassa said having Shiferaw to watch over the surrounding,
although Eshetu Estifanos had thrown the F1 bomb in the direction of the
depot, the bomb failed to detonate.
Inspector Girma said the suspect was brought to court on Monday, where
police have asked additional time to conduct further investigation.
Accordingly, Inspector Girma said, the court has given the police 14
additional days to conclude its investigation.
Inspector Girma said the suspect has given his plea to the court in
accordance with Code of Procedure No 35.
In relation to the same case, another individual whom the suspects have
counselled while planning the attack, but who did not take part, and even
opposed the idea of exploding the depot has testified before the court,
according to Inspector Girma.
Inspector Girma said the Investigation has continued.
