Blast derails freight train

KARACHI: An explosion derailed a freight train on Sunday as it crossed a
bridge in Karachi, injuring a policeman on board, officials said.

The blast caused eight Parcel Express cars to jump off the track and flip
over, said police official Darya Khan Memon, citing an account from the
lightly injured officer. But Memon's supervisor, Qasim Ghauri, said nothing
was found at the scene to indicate a bombing.

"There is no evidence that anything has been blown up - either a carriage or
the track - as happens in a bomb explosion," Ghauri said. A relief train was
immediately sent to the site of derailment to remove wagons from the down
track. The Railways deputy superintendent said traffic would be restored in
two hours. Railways Deputy Inspector General for Operations Mushtaq Shah
said it was not an incident of terrorism, but investigations were underway.

The train was transporting plastic bags from Karachi to Lahore. Junaid
Qureshi, a senior Railways official, said six scheduled trains were
disrupted by the derailment. "It was a minor explosion which did not cause
any casualty except that some wagons of a passing goods train derailed,"
Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz told media. staff report
