Unidentified gunmen fired several shots at Youssef's car in Betunia, west of Ramallah late Thursday night. The Hamas leader, who was released from Israeli prison a few months ago, was not in the car at the time of the attack. His driver responded by firing toward the gunmen and apparently managed to hit one of them. PA security sources claimed that the attack was carried out by an undercover Israeli army unit that was operating in the area. However, Hassan dismissed the allegation, hinting that Palestinians were behind the assassination attempt. "Those who carried out this attack are trying to drive a wedge between our people and create confusion," he said. "Their dream of seeing me disappear under the ground won't materialize. By God's will, I will remain with the people until we achieve all our aspirations." Asked if Israel was behind the attempt on his life, Hassan said: "All options are open as to the identity of those who carried out this attack. It is premature to point a blaming finger to any party. I just want to stress that I haven't accused Israel." Hassan said the PA had beefed up security around his house following the attack and expressed hope that the investigation would lead to "tangible" results. However, he warned the PA against a cover-up in the investigation, as has been the case with similar incidents in the past. "What good is it if they are going to close the case and stop searching for the perpetrators?" he asked. "We must chase those who are trying to create chaos and confusion on the Palestinian arena." Hassan said he and many Hamas leaders have received assurances from PA chairman Mahmoud Abbas that the PA would not try to disarm Hamas. "I have heard Abu Mazen (Abbas) and several Palestinian officials say that they won't use force to disarm Hamas," he added. "There hasn't even been any talk about disarming anyone."
