Abdelmajid Bouchar (right) BALKANS: MADRID BOMBINGS SUSPECT ARRESTED 45 DAYS AGO <javascript:aumenta();> <javascript:diminuisci();> Belgrade, 19 August (AKI) - Moroccan national Abdelmajid Bouchar, a suspect in the March 2004 Madrid bombings that killed 191 people, was actually arrested 45 days ago in Serbia, on June 23, Serbian interior minister Dragan Jocic said on Friday. The Serbian government was ascertaining Bouchar's identity at the time of his arrest, and for this reason only announced his detention on Wednesday when he was formally identified as a Madrid suspect, said Jocic. "It is true that Bouchar was arrested at Belgrade's railway station, that he was carrying Iraqi documents and that he refused to cooperate", Jocic confirmed. According to Jocic, Bouchar was too well dressed for to be a refugee, as he claimed, aimed he was, and was taking a southbound train from the northern town of Subotica to Belgrade. "Being a refugee or just a traveler, it was suspicious that he was heading south and not north," Jocic said. From that moment on, Bouchar's identity was checked, in cooperation with the Iraqi authorities. As it turned out, he was not Midhat Salah nor he was an Iraqi citizen. The international police agency Interpol's Serbian office investigation discovered that Bouchar was wanted by international warrant issued after Bouchar escaped from an apartment in Madrid as a suspect in the deadly coordinated bombings of Spanish commuter trains in Madrid on 11 March, 2004. Bouchar's seven alleged accomplices blew the apartment up, killing themselves along with a policeman. It iis not clear when and how he entered Serbia and Montenegro. "We still do not know if Bouchar was just passing through the country or if he has spent more time here. I cannot say anything about his contacts at this moment, but the important thing is to proceed with his extradition as soon as possible", Jocic said. Security in Serbia was increased after the riots in Kosovo on 17 March, 2004, and that the country is ready to fight any attempted terrorist attacks, in cooperation with other countries on the issue "because terrorism is a mutual problem which has to be of serious concern to all of us", Jocic emphasised. Bouchar was interrogated by an investigating magistrate on Thursday. After the examination, he was returned to custody in Belgrade's Central prison. Belgrade is waiting for Spanish authorities to issue the extradition demand so that the extradition proceedings might begin.
