The Australian government has secured the backing of Muslim
community leaders for its new counter-terrorism laws.

The Muslim Community Reference group, which was established earlier
in the year, has been briefed by Attorney General Philip Ruddock on
the proposals.

Our reporter, Liz Foschia, says the new laws, which are currently
being drafted, had sparked concern that members of the Muslim
community would be unfairly targeted.

The chair of the Muslim Reference Group, Dr Ameer Ali, says his
colleagues realise the need for the laws and are reassured they are
balanced and have enough safeguards.

"And therefore we think that we can now sell these to our community
with much more comfort," he said.

The Muslim leaders have also condemned the recent terrorist attacks
in Bali and have offered condolences for the victims and their
families.

The government says the new counter-terrorism laws are designed to
enable the country to better deter, prevent, detect and prosecute
acts of terrorism

Under the laws there is a provision to detain people for up to two
weeks without charge.

Police can also have someone put on a 12-month control order to
restrict their travel, limit who they associate with and force them
to carry a tracking device.
