Japanese Airline to Reduce Flights to Indonesia Following Terrorist Attacks East Asia / Pacific - Indonesia, Japan 20 Oct 2005 - Associated Press Japan's biggest airline announced Thursday it would temporarily decrease flights between Japan and Indonesia due to a slump in passenger demand following the Oct. 1 terrorist bombings in Bali, which killed 23 people and injured more than 100. Japan Airlines said it would replace separate flights from Tokyo to Jakarta and Denpasar with a single flight that would fly to Denpasar via the Indonesian capital. The airline will also reduce its service between Osaka in western Japan and Denpasar from seven to three flights a week. The cutback in flights to Indonesia follows a significant decrease in passenger demand from Japan due to the terrorist bombings, JAL said. Bali has long been a popular tourist destination for Japanese. Geoffrey Tudor, spokesman for the airline, said passenger reservations were down by some 40 percent for the three months between October and December. The reductions are scheduled to take effect Oct. 30-Dec. 22. JAL hoped that passenger demand would pick up by the end of that period, Tudor said. Two Australians and one Japanese were among those killed in the near-simultaneous bombings at three crowded restaurants in Bali. The attacks came three years after 202 people, mostly foreigners, were killed in nightclub bombings on the island. JAL's decision comes amid fears about the attack's impact on the island's tourism industry. Tourism makes up around 5 percent of Indonesia's gross domestic product, and most of the foreign tourism dollars are spent on Bali and neighboring Lombok island.
