'Bomb was in pressure cooker'
30/10/2005 10:10 - (SA)
New Delhi - Indian police on Sunday handed out a sketch of a suspect in
blasts that killed at least 61 people in New Delhi as experts said one bomb
may have consisted of explosives packed in a pressure cooker.

Experts have prepared a sketch of an Asian male who reportedly left a steel
pressure cooker near a gas cylinder in the middle-class Sarojini Nagar
market, where most of the deaths occurred during Saturday's three blasts.

"Pieces of metal from what appear to be a (pressure) cooker suggest that it
was the container of a bomb designed to ignite inflammables which were in
great abundance at the market," a source from the National Security Guard
commando force told AFP.

At least 188 people were injured after the explosions rocked the Sarojini
Nagar and Paharganj markets, filled with shoppers for the Hindu festival of
Diwali, as well as a bus in the city's Okhla industrial district.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility but Prime Minister Manmohan
Singh blamed "terrorism". Suspicion fell on militant groups opposed to the
peace process between India and its Muslim neighbour Pakistan.

The security source, citing preliminary forensic reports, said the
explosions at the two markets triggered secondary fires aimed at causing
maximum casualties.

"It was very professional," the source said, adding that traces of explosive
were being examined to determine the source.

New Delhi's 71 000-strong police was mobilised to search for suspects, other
officials said, adding that a total of 22 people had been detained in
different part of the capital.

Detectives raided guest houses and hotels in Paharganj, which is also
popular among Western budget tourists, and the shanty towns of Okhla where
tens of thousands of migrant industrial workers live, a police spokesman
said.

Police appealed to residents for information and placed the city's three
railway stations and main bus terminal under scrutiny, the spokesman said.

Intelligence agencies on Sunday brought in reinforcements from other regions
to speed up the investigation. Singh was to head a cabinet meeting later
Sunday.

"We are also working in tandem with our counterparts in Jammu and Kashmir
for a lead," said the security source. More than 44,000 people have died in
an anti-Indian revolt in the disputed Himalayan region since 1989.

The Press Trust of India, quoting investigators, said the blasts could have
been carried out by Lashker-e-Taiba or a pan-Islamic guerrilla force "in
league with Al Qaeda". There was no official confirmation of the report.

The three blasts occurred early in the evening as tens of thousands of
shoppers thronged the markets, stocking up on food and buying gifts before
Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights that begins on Tuesday.

Most shops in Sarojini Nagar and Paharganj were also packed with
firecrackers, which Hindus use to celerate Diwali.
