Italy smashes migrant smugglers BBC December 15, 2005 Illegal immigrants on board an Italian Coast Guard boat - 13 June 2005 Italy is a popular gateway for immigration into Europe Italian police say they have smashed an international immigrant smuggling ring after an operation that also saw raids in France, Greece, Turkey and the UK. Police said dozens of people were arrested in the five countries, following a three-year investigation. The network made millions of euros trafficking more than 5,000 people to Italy via Greece hidden in boats or trucks, police said in a statement. Authorities said the immigrants came from the Middle East. The immigrants are said to have paid up to $15,000 for their passage, with most ending up in Britain and some in France. The network was run by an Iraqi Kurd living in Rome, who made several million dollars, police said. Thousands of illegal migrants try to enter Italy every year, often aboard rickety boats. Last month, Italian authorities found the bodies of nine migrants washed up on the south-east Sicilian coast after their boat ran aground off the shore.
