GROWING CONCERN ON FATE OF THREE BRITONS
Ramallah, 29 Dec. (AKI) - The fate of a British aid worker and her parents, abducted in the Gaza Strip, remained uncertain on Thursday amid negotiations to secure their release. Kate Burton, 25, was taking her parents on a tour of the southern border area of Rafah on Wednesday when their car was stopped by masked gunmen. The three were bundled into another car which sped away. According to police sources cited by the London daily, The Guardian, the kidnappers were negotiating with Palestinian officials for the release of the three Britons. The abduction is the latest in a series aimed at Westeners working in Gaza. Gunmen have attempted to use the hostages as a bargaining chip to obtain concessions from the Palestinian Authority. Most such snatchings have been resolved speedily, with the hostages released after several hours. Burton had spent four months doing public relations work in Gaza for a PalestiGAZA: nian human rights organisation al-Mezan and was planning to stay on for another six months, the Guardian report said. In recent weeks tensions in Gaza and the West Bank have intensified as members of the ruling Fatah movement, including gunmen from the militant al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, insisted they be given an opportunity to take part in legislative elections set for 25 January. Last week, Fatah split into two factions in a power struggle between older members and a young guard frustrated at marginalisation. That split was overcome on Wednesday when it was announced that candidates would run on a unified Fatah list. Palestinian Authority president, Mahmoud Abbas, welcomed the move which will see the Fatah list being led by the leader of the 'young guard' Marwan Barghouti, who has been jailed by Israel. ------------------------ Yahoo!
