Australian PM angers Muslims with jihad remarks

SYDNEY: Australian Prime Minister John Howard has criticised the
minority of Muslims who "rave on about jihad" and have "extreme
attitudes" towards women, saying they do not fit into Australian society.

Islamic leaders immediately condemned the remarks as "offensive and
ignorant", saying they would fan the flames of prejudice against
Islam. Howard's comments were made in interviews in December for a
book by journalists from The Australian newspaper to mark his 10th
anniversary in power next month, the paper reported Monday.

The prime minister later defended his comments as his "right and
duty" to express his thoughts. The book quotes him as saying that
Muslim immigration to Australia had presented problems not seen in
previous waves of migration from Europe and Asia.

"I do think there is this particular complication because there is a
fragment which is utterly antagonistic to our kind of society, and
that is a difficulty," Howard said. "You can't find any equivalent in
Italian, or Greek or Lebanese or Chinese or Baltic immigration to
Australia. There is no equivalent of raving on about jihad (holy war),
but that is the major problem," he said. afp
