What a juicy target for a couple of Tomahawk cruise missiles...even do the martyrs a good turn by not forcing them to delay their entry into Paradise and the 72 virgins. Bruce
Iran: 'Martyrdom-seeking' Volunteers Meet at Tehran University Report by the Politics Desk under the headline: "Meeting of martyrdom-seeking volunteers at the Khajeh Nasir University with a speech by Hasan Abbasi and in presence of foreign reporters" Sharq Wednesday, February 22, 2006 Politics Desk: On Saturday night, the Khajeh Nasir University of Tehran played host to a group of people who had come there after an invitation by the university student Basij to register their names as volunteers for martyrdom-seeking (suicide) operations and listen to a speech by Hasan Abbasi, one of the main theoreticians of the martyrdom-seeking current (Original: jaryan-e esteshhadi). This event coincided with the anniversary of the issuance of the Fatwa of death sentence by Imam Khomeyni against Salman Rushdie in 1367 (year ending 21 March 1989). At that time, because of the publication of his book "The Satanic Verses", which included insults to the Prophet of Islam, Salman Rushdie was declared as an apostate and duly sentenced to death by Imam Khomeyni. The ceremonies at the Khajeh Nasir University were staged on the anniversary of that Fatwa while, according to the Aftab news agency, the unprecedented large presence of foreign reporters in the event surprised the participants and organizers of the ceremonies. The correspondents of at least eight foreign television networks were there to cover the event, and these included the BBC News, Al-Minar TV, the Japanese TV, and... (ellipsis as in the original). The correspondents and photographers of the Western television networks and news agencies were present near the volunteers' registration desk, and they were waiting to conduct interviews with those coming forward to sign their names. However, in the end, they had to be content with just taking photographs of the registration forms, because not many people were actually registering their names. Suicide operations, the most strategic action (Subhead) At the start of the ceremonies, Samadi, the spokesman of the HQ for commemoration of the martyrs of the global Islamic movement, delivered a speech. He referred to the 16th anniversary of martyrdom of Mostafa Mazokh, the face of (as written in the original) of martyrdom-seeking operations against Salman Rushdie. He also spoke about the recent insults and violations against the sacred name of the Messenger of God (Muhammad). He said: "The martyrdom-seeking operations are now considered as one of the most strategic tactics of struggle against the enemies of Islam, and the retreat of the Jews from the occupied territories has been the result of the martyrdom-seeking operations by the fighters of the Islamic Jihad and HAMAS". At the ceremony, then a film depicting the martyrdom-seeking operations of the members of the Islamic Jihad was screened, which showed the fighters trying to infiltrate the Jewish settlement of Morag. Abbasi: Liberalism is equal to moral laxness (Subhead) In the continuation of the ceremonies, Hasan Abbasi delivered a speech. He explained that two years ago, a book was published in the United States about the Prophet of Islam, which was entitled "The Prophet of Doom". He said: "In the opinion of the author of the said book, the Prophet of Islam was the messenger of blood and violence. The fact is that with that type of outlook and perception, the Western man cannot understand what martyrdom means, and for that reason, Islam is being viewed within the framework of terrorism." The head of the Center for the Doctrine of Security without Frontiers went on to say: "The stances of Merkel and Bush on the insult against the Prophet of Islam and their support for the Danish newspaper responsible for that insult are factors which have tarnished their image in the Islamic world, and provoked a question in the minds of the Muslims that is it Islam which is a terrorist creed or Christianity?" In response to this question, he said: "Protestantism metamorphosised Christianity, and presented a new face and image of that religion. Afterwards, the era of Enlightenment brought the trend of modern thought to its climax." Referring to the emphasis of the Europeans on the Holocaust, Abbasi said: "Merkel has explicitly announced that her ancestors burned the Jews, and this is the fruit of modernism. The question is which entity is terrorist: a nation which offers such an explicit confessions, or the Muslims?" Abbasi went on to say: "The modernism which some of our home-grown intellectuals are defending today is the darkest experience of mankind's history, and those in the Islamic Republic who speak about Protestantism seem to be ignorant of that fact. The reality is that in our country some circles are defending the schools of liberalism and socialism, and are accusing others of fascism, even though fascism is not an Islamic phenomenon in any way." He then addressed the German philosopher and a supporter of the theory of modernity, Jurgen Habermas, and said: "Come and let us end this war against God. This is because liberalism in effect equals moral laxness, and it is because of this factor that the trend of collapse and decline of the West has got under way. If the Western liberal democracy reaches a dead-end, there is no replacement and alternative for it. As we feel sorry and concerned for the Western world, we would like to warn it that the current trend only takes them closer to their decline. You have more than 2,700 nuclear warheads, but feel frightened even though Iran has not yet acquired even nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. Which human rights, democracy and freedom are you precisely talking about when your commandos are easily subjecting children to torture in Iraq?" According to the Aftab news agency, Abbasi explained that even "selling oneself (to God) needs to have a direction and aim", and went on to say: "Selling oneself means surrendering, and Islam itself is the art of surrendering" (sentence as written in the original). He stated that the economic system prescribed by the Koran was a customer-centered economy, and said: "The economic doctrine of Islam has been explained succinctly in Verse 111 of the Baqarah Chapter (Surah) which states that the process of supply by human beings is relative, but it is absolute when it comes from God, and God only buys from the faithful. Therefore, not everyone is worthy of martyrdom-seeking operations. For instance, the Lebanese Hezbollah is endeared because it sells itself to God, but an organization such as the Al-Qa'ida is a terrorist entity because it kills human beings."
