Delegates at World Social Forum urge Muslim unity against US

Karachi - Delegates at the ongoing World Social Forum (WSF) have urged
Islamic countries to unite against the United States and counter what they
called its 'imperialist and anti-Muslims approach'.
The appeal by 'anti-globalization' activists Tuesday came as they debated
the Palestinian issue on the sidelines of the WSF being held in Pakistan's
port city of Karachi. More than 20,000 people from some 58 countries are
participating in the event.
'Palestinians, fighting for their right to have an independent state want a
political solution to the problem,' said Jamal Juma, the head of
three-member Palestinian delegation attending the WSF.
However, Juma said he did not expect any help either from the US or the
European governments in resolution of the issue, insisting no one in these
countries was listening to the Palestinian voice.
'It is therefore necessary to mount an international pressure on the US and
other major powers to seriously and sincerely work for solution of the
crisis in Middle East and forums like WSF are very helpful in mobilizing
public opinion in favour of the Palestinian cause.
Other speakers including a New Delhi-based Palestinian diplomat AKA Zamli
and an Iranian female delegate rallied Muslim countries to unite against
America.
Zamli said they believed in dialogue and their message is 'for peace not the
war'.
The Iranian delegate pointed out that while the US feels threatened by the
Iranian nuclear programme, it never asked Israel, a threshold nuclear state
to give up its nuclear programme.
'Western countries are using the tool of democracy just for their own
interests,' she said, calling on the Islamic world to counter this (Western
- Eds.) approach 'unitedly'.
Anti-US and anti-globalization sentiments run very high at the forum, which
began with the call last Friday to 'rethink and recreate' globalization for
benefit of people in the developing world, particularly South Asia.
The forum was founded in 2001 by community activists, trade unionists, young
people and academics as an alternative to the establishment World Economic
Forum in Davos, Switzerland, which attracts the global political and
business elite.
