Mourners pay respects to fallen Cdn. soldiers

Mourners paid their last respects to two Canadian soldiers killed in the
line of duty in Afghanistan.

Funerals were held Monday for Lieut. William Turner in Erin, Ont. and Cpl.
Randy Payne in Gananoque, Ont. The two towns are about 350 kilometres apart.

Payne, 32, and Turner, 44 were one of four Canadian soldiers killed on April
22 when their light-armoured vehicle hit a roadside bomb near Gumbad, north
of Kandahar.

Cpl. Matthew Dinning and Bombardier Myles Mansell also died.

More than 500 people packed the small church to say goodbye to Payne, who
was married with two small children.

Speakers were set up outside the church for those who couldn't fit inside
the building.

"Randy gave his all in his work,'' said Capt., the Rev. Larry Keddie,
chaplain at CFB Wainwright, Alta., where Payne was stationed.

"He was also a very dedicated husband. He also loved his children, he loved
them deeply and cared about them.''

Payne got a formal military funeral. Turner, a reservist, had a private,
non-military funeral service.

At Turner's service, fellow soldiers spoke of a good man who wanted to help
the children of Afghanistan.

"He was an uncle to many kids ... and when he saw the state of the way the
children lived in Afghanistan, it hit him hard,'' Robertson said.

Turner's job in Afghanistan was liaison with local Afghans.

"He's the kind of person that you meet for the first time and felt relaxed
with,'' said Lt.-Col. Lee Villiger, a fellow reservist, explaining why the
job suited Turner.

"(He) was the person who reaches out his hand, makes contact with the
locals, the elders in the community, and brings them together to start
negotiations and talk on behalf of the Canadian Forces to quell any concerns
or conflicts.''

Toyo Turner, Turner's sister, didn't speak to reporters on Monday.

She said this in a previous statement: "Bill knew he was making a difference
to the people of Afghanistan and wanted to continue this effort despite the
obstacles our troops face.

"I want the Canadian public to know that my brother died doing what he loved
and doing what he truly believed in.''

The army's commander in Ontario praised the service of Turner and other
reservists.

"Bill, like so many members of the reserve army, are folks that have regular
jobs,'' Brig.-Gen. Guy Thibault told reporters after the service. "Bill was
a postman and served part-time.

"They're folks that believe so much in their country that they're willing to
sort of put aside their careers for periods of time and make this kind of
contribution. So they're certainly to be honoured and recognized for the
outstanding services that they do.''

On Wednesday, a funeral will be held for Mansell in Victoria.

Family and friends said goodbye to Dinning in a ceremony on Saturday in the
southwestern Ontario town of Wingham.

During the service, Dinning's father, Lincoln, criticized a decision by
Prime Minister Stephen Harper's government to bar the media from covering
the repatriation ceremonies of the four fallen soldiers.

Harper won't comment on Dinning's remarks, Sandra Buckler, Harper's head of
communications told The Canadian Press on Sunday.
