Schumer Gives Up Hope on More Anti-Terror Money

June 05, 2006 -Senator Charles Schumer says it's unlikely New York will be
able to secure more homeland security funding this year. This after the
city's share was cut by 40% from last year.

REPORTER: Schumer and others are calling for the formula to be changed next
year. Mayor Bloomberg says Washington doesn't appreciate the way the city
spends the money, such as paying for police overtime so that cops can
monitor landmarks like the Brooklyn Bridge.

BLOOMBERG: Washington doesn't quite understand. The ways that you prevent
terrorism and the ways you bring down crime, the ways you improve society is
with out municipal work forces on the street doing their jobs. And
Washington likes to pay for capital projects where they can have a photo op
and see a big truck show up in the middle of a small town.

REPORTER: Senator Schumer suggested that the cuts are part of a broader
pattern emerging out of Washington, and points to preliminary cuts for
bioterror funding from the Centers for Disease Control. He says the CDC
intends to give $21 million to New York, a 17 percent cut from last year.
