US troops killed in Afghanistan 22-06-2006 From: Agence France-Presse FOUR US soldiers were killed and one was wounded in clashes with militants in north-eastern Afghanistan, the coalition said today. The four were killed yesterday during "combat operations and combat rescue operations" in Nuristan province near the border with Pakistan, they said. "Coalition forces attacked enemy extremists in a remote area of the Kamdesh district while conducting security operations to interdict enemy movement through northern Nuristan," a statement said. "During the mission, four US soldiers were killed." Coalition warplanes and ground forces continued to attack enemy positions into the night. The number of rebels killed in the attack had still to be determined, it said. The wounded soldier was evacuated to hospital for treatment and was in a stable condition. Forty-one coalition soldiers have now been killed in action in Afghanistan this year, around half of them Americans. The United States has more than 20,000 soldiers in Afghanistan, most of them part of the coalition that is hunting down Taliban and other rebels in southern and eastern Afghanistan. The United States led the offensive that toppled the Taliban from government in late 2001 after the hardliners failed to hand over al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden for the September 11 attacks on US cities.
