A man that was arrested with suspected terrorist links may have purchased
phones here in Nebraska. It happened after Thursday's scare when cell phones
were thought to be used to detonate bombs on airlines. But it may not be
what it seems.
Mark McNeil, Store Manager of the Kearney Walmart, "It was multiple that
they were trying to purchase, above 40 I would say."
Kearney, Hastings, Norfolk and Grand Island, all saying that Walmart stores
have seen incidents of people trying to buy many "Pay-As-You-Go" cell
phones.
"They'll go from one register to another register to an outlying register,"
explains McNeil, "If it's for terrorist reasons or other reasons that they
can't be traced properly there's some control obviously the FBI might have
some interest."
But local managers say almost all of the time it's not to threaten the
nation.
"There are some people that buy them and ship them overseas to make a profit
off of what they can buy them from us for and resell them for," adds McNeil.
Authorities now say the three men arrested, one who was in Nebraska had more
than 1,000 cell phones and have no links to terrorism, but the policy of
three phones per day per customer at Walmart can help reduce the risk.
"I would say we as a retailer need to enforce the mass quantity buying to
limit the exposure anyone in the us would have if it's a terrorist
situation," concludes McNeil.
The three men were charged with collecting or providing materials for
terrorist acts, but they claimed they were buying the phones for resale.
