Secrets of their success
Apache Company was the clear victor in its long campaign to chase a
terrorist cell out of an Iraqi town. Apache troops captured 32 and killed
five members of Jama'at Al Tawid Al Jihad, or Group of Monotheism and Jihad
- a branch of al-Qaida in Iraq. Another had killed himself in a suicide car
bomb.
Moreover, the defeat was so decisive that JTJ had withdrawn leader Abu Hamza
in disgrace.
Apache's leaders say their success owed much to several factors that could
apply to similar situations elsewhere. Particularly important, they said,
were:
. Putting boots on the ground to impose order.
. Recruiting local police officers.
. Employing well-trained, culturally attuned tactical human intelligence
teams.
. Being ready and able to conduct "tactical questioning" of suspects at all
times.
. The timely fusion of intelligence from all sources.
. "Tactical patience."
. Turning potential enemies against each other.
