South Africa, Iran sign trade agreement

DURBAN: South Africa and Iran on Wednesday signed an agreement to enhance
bilateral trade and economic relations.

The Customs Cooperation Agreement was signed after a meeting between South
Africa's Foreign Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and her visting Iranian
counterpart Manouchehr Mottaki.

The two sides discussed the exchange of delegations to look into the
possibility of signing an agreement to exempt diplomatic and official
passport holders from visa requirements and also to consider the possibility
of exempting legitimate tourists for a period of 30 days in this regard.

The Iranian Foreign Minister said his country also intended to set up crude
oil storage at Saldanha Bay in the Western Cape. "We believe South Africa
can act as a gateway for the Iranian petrochemical trade in southern
Africa," Mottaki said.

On the issue of Iran's controversial nuclear programme, Mottaki said it was
clear to all that Tehran was only pursuing the promotion of peaceful use of
nuclear energy.
